“But when we get into questions of action by groups, by areas, and by A.A. life by avoiding conflict and exclusiveness. advocates no theological proposition except God as we understand Him, we greatly simplify A.A. “We need to distinguish sharply between spiritual simplicity and functional simplicity.” I pray that today I may be at peace with myself. I pray that today I may have inner peace. When you have earned that peace, you are fit to judge between true and false values, between the values of the kingdom of God and the values of all that the world has to offer. To know that peace is to have received the stamp of the kingdom of God. “Lord, we thank Thee for the great gift of peace, that peace which passeth all understanding, that peace which the world can neither give nor take away.” That is the peace that only God can give in the midst of a restless world and surrounded by trouble and difficulty. Have I stopped trying to run my own life? So we turn to that Divine Principle in the universe that we call God. That’s practically impossible to believe. Atheism, it has been said before, is blind faith in the strange proposition that this universe originated in a cipher and aimlessly rushes nowhere. Not to believe in a Higher Power drives us to atheism. We alcoholics have to believe in some Power greater than ourselves. Do I neglect their needs and desire for my attention and concern? When I’m around them, am I irritable or boring? Are my “amends” a mumbled “Sorry,” or do they take the form of patience and tolerance? Do I preach to them, trying to reform or “fix” them? Have I ever really cleaned house with them? “The spiritual life is not a theory. I expect them to see and value my progress, but they don’t–unless I show them. I expect my loved ones to understand, but they cannot. I can be doing great in the program–applying it at meetings, at work, and in service activities–and find that things have gone to pieces at home. Talk with someone who cares about you so that they can help guide you through these tough times of change.… a spiritual life which does not include … family obligations may not be so perfect after all. What can you do differently going forward? Reflect on what’s happened in this situation. If you’re nodding your head and thinking, “Yeah, I’ve been there,” then the first step is to take a moment. You may think I am ignoring or neglecting them when what they really need from me is my kind and attentive ear! The tone in which we speak to people can be a form of communication all on its own. The way you communicate with others is just as important, if not more so, than the words that come out of your mouth. If we had a clear conscience then our interactions would be easier but if there is resentment hanging over us or guilt for something we have done wrong not only should apologize sincerely try mediation as well so these events never happen again. Speak kindly with them when you interact with them which will show that they are important in your life. If you’re neglecting the needs and desires of your loved ones, it’s time to make some changes. It seems like a lot of people are okay with this kind of inconsistency however there is something important about having your loved ones also see you as progressing professionally while seeing them grow more distant emotionally or physically (or both). I know what I need to do for my family and myself, but it’s hard when they don’t understand. family obligations may not be so perfect after all.
